For twenty-six years, I met hundreds of people.
Executives, entrepreneurs, salespeople, decision-makers. Busy, effective, results-oriented people. Like me.
These meetings all had one objective. A contract to sign, a partnership to build, a deal to close. I knew how to read people — quickly, precisely. It was my job.
But by being so focused on the objective, I had ended up not really looking at the people in front of me.
Return to humanity
Photography gave me that back.
Not the desire to create beautiful images — the desire to take time. To stop. To really look. To focus on someone with no other intention than to understand who they are.
For me, photographing is above all contemplating. Being present to what is happening in front of you, without trying to control it.
It's the opposite of what I did for twenty-six years.
And it has become the most precious thing I do.
What I learned about people with a camera
The camera is intimidating. I've seen it hundreds of times — someone stiffening up, looking for their pose, trying to be the correct version of themselves.
But I've also seen something else.
When time is taken — truly taken — when the conversation has happened, when the person starts to forget they are being photographed — something happens.
A truer version emerges. Not the ideal version. The real version.
The one you don't usually show because you don't have the time, or because you haven't dared yet.
I've seen people see themselves for the first time in their own portraits. Recognize themselves in something they didn't know they carried.
Photography doesn't reveal what you hide. It reveals what you hadn't yet seen of yourself.
