About Xavier

Full stack data scientist with over 4 years of experience (14 in total in IT and EdTech) with a strong profile in fundamentals, statistics, programming, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Physics graduate, with specific data science training from MIT and ongoing master's degrees in e-learning and computer engineering (UOC).

My profile is technically and scientifically oriented, with experience in team management, Agile methodologies, and the development and design of high-demand B2C applications.

Besides R, I can also carry out Data Science projects in Python, although if there are no client preferences, I prefer to combine both languages. For example, for EDA and statistics, R is more effective, while for Machine Learning or Deep Learning, Python is more robust.

My work philosophy is to always prioritize the continuous delivery of value to the client, delivering products and results weekly. This way, the client has the opportunity to modify the project's direction by evaluating what has already been delivered, providing the project with the necessary flexibility. My goal is to create a climate of mutual trust based on facts and transparency.

Previously, I worked for 10 years in the IT and EdTech sector at the publishing house Vicens Vives, as director of the digital content department and later as a project manager and agile coach.

I am accustomed to working with IT teams, speaking their language, as well as with heads of sales, marketing, and logistics departments.

I have been responsible for the hiring and management of dozens of projects in different EdTech and IT areas with suppliers and partners of various sizes.

I am a creative and meticulous person, an artisan. I like data science because it combines disciplines that interest me: mathematics, statistics, computer engineering, data visualization, project management, and interaction with teams and clients.

After the company's data integration project, I took charge of initiating data science and data analysis projects.

My responsibility is to address the needs of the different company departments in terms of analysis and data science.

    Featured Projects:
    • Modeling the probability distribution of student grades based on parameter estimation of a beta distribution. Prediction and updating using Bayesian statistics.
    • Classification and segmentation of schools to optimize sales visits using decision trees, clustering, and linear classifiers. Results are presented in dashboards with Plotly.
    • Estimation of the contribution of digital products to the sale of physical products based on statistical analysis of cross-variables.
    • Using R libraries googlesheets4 and gargle to read and write data, create and manage files in Google Drive as a method for data exchange with any company department.
    • Predictive model of traffic volume on our servers due to the change generated by the pandemic.

The main purpose of this role was to lay the groundwork for the start of BI and data science operations in the company. The choice of my profile was essentially due to two reasons. The first is my knowledge of most of the company's departments and workflows from having collaborated with them on previous projects. The second is my technical knowledge (SQL, systems, etc.) and R language to carry out the task.

The main projects I developed are:
    • Unifying the relational databases of all departments into a single physical system.
    • Implementing the API of the Force Manager sales management application in R to obtain the necessary data for nightly batch processes.
    • Creating an abstraction layer in R above the databases that allows access to multiple sets of interest, including many cross-queries.
    • Defining a series of nightly batch processes that use this abstraction layer to build redundant, denormalized datasets, and then save them in Apache Parquet format for later agile querying. I use the Apache Arrow library to interact with Parquet.
    • Finally, I define a series of business queries on the Parquet data lake to feed the first BI and data science projects.
    • In parallel, I started working on transferring the same queries on the data lake to Python language using PyArrow, although at that time the library was in its very early stages.
