About Trayana

My name is Trayana Kovacheva, and I am an architect and PhD candidate in Built Heritage
Conservation at the Politecnico di Milano. After completing my Master’s Degree in Architecture with a thesis on the Adaptive reuse of the Hennebique silos in the port of Genoa, I earned a Specialisation in Architectural and Landscape Heritage at the University of Genoa, focusing on the former military airport “E. Mossi” in Novi Ligure. Alongside my academic training, I have gained professional experience in restoration and conservation projects, working on buildings from different periods and typologies.
My doctoral research focuses on Diagnostic methods and conservation interventions for the external finishes of Liberty architecture in Liguria. In this work, I combine historical and critical approaches with technical and scientific investigations, with particular attention to material decay processes.
In addition to research, I have developed strong competencies in digital surveying tools (laser
scanning, photogrammetry, LiDAR) and BIM modelling, acquired through experience on complex projects in both academic and professional settings. I am also passionate about photography and drawing, which I consider essential tools for observation and communication in my work.

Research focused on diagnostic techniques and conservative approaches applied to Liberty façades. The study examines historical construction materials and techniques, evaluating whether these require specialized diagnostic protocols compared to traditional historic buildings. The research includes fieldwork, material analysis, and comparative study of case studies across Liguria (Italy).

Field of study: Conservation of Architectural Heritage Thesis: Former Military Airport “E. Mossi”, Novi Ligure (AL). Restoration and Adaptive Reuse Project The thesis focuses on the former Military Airport “E. Mossi” in Novi Ligure, a complex of buildings constructed in the 1930s in the Rationalist style. The runway is still in use today, while most of the military buildings have been abandoned since the 1990s. The project focuses on the former barracks, a three-storey structure with a reinforced concrete frame of beams and pillars, and proposes a comprehensive regeneration project for the entire area, which is redesigned as a public park. The buildings are to be restored and assigned new functions related to aviation and airport activities, with the barracks intended to become the new headquarters of the flight training centre. The main methodological challenges concern the deterioration processes affecting reinforced-concrete structures and the adaptive reuse of military facilities through functions compatible with the peaceful dynamics of the contemporary city.
