About Dr. Thorsten

I am a physicist (Dr. rer. nat.) with over ten years of experience in scientific software development, simulation, and data analysis — spanning academic research, satellite instrumentation at Airbus Defence and Space, and industrial R&D at LayTec AG.

My core expertise is building Python-based simulation and analysis tools that are physically grounded and flexible. Throughout my career, performance optimisation through simulation has been a recurring theme — constructing physical models, applying Monte Carlo methods to explore parameter spaces and account for uncertainties, and using the results to point toward the most promising approach before committing real resources. I've applied this approach across X-ray telescope simulation, Earth observation processors, and reflectometry analysis — always starting from a clean physical model and letting Monte Carlo handle what can't be known exactly.

I develop end-to-end pipelines: from physical model design through implementation in Python, validation against real measurements, and delivery of well-documented, maintainable tools that colleagues and customers can actually use.

Beyond my engineering background, I bring a rare additional expertise: scientific 3D visualisation. I create highly accurate, publication-quality 3D reconstructions for science communication, education, and research — combining domain expertise with professional-grade tools (Blender, Rhinoceros 3D).

I am available for projects in:

- Scientific simulation and modelling (sensor systems, optical/physical processes, data pipelines)
- Data analysis and visualisation (Python, TensorFlow)
- Scientific software development and tool modernisation
- Scientific visualisation for research, education, and museum outreach

I enjoy technically challenging, meaningful work — particularly in science, research infrastructure, medical technology, climate/earth observation, and cultural heritage digitisation.
