When, before succumbing to madness, Nicéphore Niépce captured what would later be called the first photograph through his bedroom window, he unknowingly annihilated the efforts of his contemporaries and successors, be they artists, realist painters, naturalists, romantics, or neo-classicals. As photography henceforth represented the world better than the brush, art would progressively move away from a realistic depiction of the world. Contours disappeared with the Impressionists, colors with Fauvism, forms with Cubism, plausibility with the Surrealists, meaning with the Dadaists, and even the subject with abstract art and the medium with contemporary art.

Today, it has never been easier or more democratic to represent reality. Yet, ignoring the Nicéphore effect, modes of graphic representation of the city have plunged into this race for realism. "Realistic perspective" has become a given. Its systematic use has contributed to standardizing architectural, urban, and societal representation. These photorealistic renderings everywhere project the same image of a fantasized reality (sometimes to the point of absurdity): an ideal, homogeneous, and polished city that has become a standard of representation in itself.

Aware of this new Nicéphore effect, and following in the footsteps of our artistic ancestors, Sauvarjon attempts to reintroduce something new into the conception of architectural images.
