La Guilde des Plumes, the first professional association to structure a French network of writers of all kinds, has decided to shed light on what a "writer" is.

Lend me your pen to write a word... Writing for others is an activity as old as writing itself. And yet, writing professions are still little known, shrouded in mystery.

First, "writer" is an activity, not always a profession or a unique or defined function. Those who practice it are often "Swiss army knives" with multiple tasks, but whose common traits can be identified to outline what writers do and what drives them - their skills and motivations.

What do writers do, or rather, what do all writers do, beyond the diversity of their practices?

While they may write in their own name in other contexts, writers write with and for someone else, regardless of the nature of the commission – speech, opinion piece, book, or editorial charter.

They serve a client and a mission with discretion and confidentiality, supporting projects without being the initiators, not signing the texts, and voluntarily remaining in the background.

Writers thus seek to adapt to the client's style and challenges to best meet their expectations – even evolving them through discussions with the client.

On this basis, writers reflect on how to convey a message: they choose the best words to express it, but must also understand the organization's strategy, or even collaborate in its definition.

More than "speaking well" or "speaking beautifully," writers must strive to "speak accurately" – according to the context and the expectations of the person employing them in this activity. Clarity of message for an audience or readership takes precedence over purely linguistic aspects.
