HPE is moving its applications to the cloud by transforming its old 5G services into containerized applications on Kubernetes and Openshift.

My goal was to help the development team gain more knowledge about Kubernetes and adopt best practices for transforming their services and deploying them on k8 and OpenShift platforms.

What I achieved:

- Integrated the team into k8s and OCP by understanding the differences between the two platforms through deployment practice.

- Advised on how to debug the exposure (service, node port, cluster IP, application routing, etc.) of an application.

- Provided best practices for running legacy services in a Container as a Service Platform (k8s & OCP).

- Practiced the first deployment of the legacy application on k8s & OCP with the team.

HPE is moving its 5G service components to PaaS (Platform as a Service) with Kubernetes (Openshift). Containers have become the de facto computing units for modern cloud-native applications. During this assignment, I supported and assisted the system test team in deploying and configuring several Kubernetes clusters (Openshift) intended to host the various services of their 5G solution for the telecommunications industry.

During this assignment, I carried out:

- Support for the deployment and configuration of Kubernetes clusters (Openshift) on Vmware

- Shared best practices on managing and configuring ingress routes, role-based access control, HugePage, PVC, resource management (CPU and memory requests and limits)

- Deployed/Configured operators (cluster logging and monitoring operators, Prometheus, etc.)

- Deployed platform observability (Dashboards for availability, capacity, and performance KPIs)

- Shared best practices and cluster management tools.

- Shared methodologies for debugging pod startup issues during deployment

- Debugged application exposure, pod, and network performance issues

- Deployed multi-site HA DNS (master-slave with bind9).

- Shared knowledge and explanations on different types of exposure (Ingress routes, Edge, SSL re-encrypted route, Passthrough, node port, etc..)

Orange, as part of its digitalization plan, aims to transform into a software company. To achieve this, it relies on the DevOps culture by equipping itself with a PaaS platform (Kubernetes/Openshift) to containerize its applications.

Within this assignment, my role, along with the build team, was to develop the PaaS solution within the client's ecosystem in a fully industrialized manner using continuous integration and deployment tools and processes. Once the platform was in production, I was responsible for integrating planned features and bug fixes into its roadmap based on our error budget.
