About Jacob

A multidisciplinary autodidactic entrepreneur, previously Technical Director with a London agency through the dotcom years, subsequently working with startups establishing and leading teams offshore (India) and nearshore (Portugal), most recently I've also undertaken significant opensource endeavours.

With this broad background originating in design I can not only consider business models and needs whilst also taking onboard user feedback to build highly performant bespoke ground-up solutions, but also take into consideration and apply best practices across security and user experience to cover and anticipate the complete life-cycle whilst optimising purpose.

I undertake both relatively simple concepts (blogs, single-product ecommerce) through to the complex requiring deep understanding of their business processes (B2B2C marketplaces, process automation and integrations). I do not bash out stuff on off-the-shelf CMS such as Wordpress/Django/Magento, however will only consider bespoke solutions where they actually deliver improvements without undue overhead.

Having recruited and lead teams, I can also train in or out of house support staff where such resources are desired long term. Similarly if after an initial project phase (e.g. MVP) you wish to retain myself for ongoing work I can be very flexible on terms. For design or native mobile dev I can collaborate, or potentially take on a wider scope.

Experience

  • The Moon Mill
    Founder
    TECH
    January 2011 - Today (15 years and 5 months)
A personal R&D endeavour to explore the architecture, performance, and synergies of ecosystems through their platforms and environments, with a project for each of webapps, and collaborative spaces (physical, i.e. coworking).

The web platform project is an efficient opensource development and hosting framework built upon Lua, providing simple syntax for inexperienced staff whilst simultaneously offering great flexibility in usage and integrations. Created from the ground up to provide high-performance hosting of entire web-applications, and achieving the key goal of greatly improving page response (to <5ms) over common e-commerce/CMS frameworks (e.g. deployments using WP/Magento are commonly >250ms).
  • P3

    SOCIAL NETWORKS
    January 2008 - January 2009 (1 year)
    New Delhi, India
A unique platform enabling users to dispatch media and text posts to hundreds of social networking services, from a variety of client applications. I architected the platform's functionality and managed Java developers in Delhi, for the first public release by the US-based founders.
  • Holocore
    Founder, Lead Dev
    SOFTWARE PUBLISHING
    January 2004 - January 2008 (4 years)
    Bengaluru, India
A micro-ISV and developer of photo-sharing related solutions. As founder I performed the roles of developer (Mac), architect and designer (multi-platform)—releasing and supporting our PictureSync for Mac product entirely myself. With a small team I further developed our projects with PictureSync for Windows and the MediaSock (open source) API interoperability framework, along with bespoke C#.NET solutions for clients including Microsoft and Scrapblog.
