As the team leader responsible for migrating a COBOL-based banking system to a microservices architecture, I faced one of the biggest technological challenges of my career. This project not only involved a technical transformation but also a cultural shift within the team and the organization. Our goal was to modernize a critical system while ensuring business continuity and data integrity.

The first step was a thorough analysis of the legacy system, identifying key modules and critical dependencies. This allowed us to prioritize the functionalities to be migrated and design a roadmap that minimized the impact on daily operations. We designed the new microservices-based architecture, ensuring that each service was autonomous, scalable, and easily integrable through APIs.

One of the biggest challenges was data management, as the COBOL system used monolithic and rigid structures. We implemented a data synchronization strategy to ensure that information was available in both environments during the transition. In parallel, we trained the team in modern technologies such as containers, orchestrators, and more current languages, fostering an agile and collaborative mindset.

The migration was carried out incrementally, releasing individual services and testing them in controlled environments before their full deployment. Thanks to this strategy, we managed to mitigate risks, reduce downtime, and ensure the quality of the final system. By the end of the project, we had successfully transformed an obsolete system into a modern, flexible platform ready for future business challenges. This success was the result of strategic planning, team collaboration, and a commitment to technical excellence.
