About Dietmar

I am a Senior Industrial Automation & SCADA Engineer with many years of experience delivering production-critical software and control-system solutions in industrial environments. My work focuses on the interface between PLC-controlled machinery and IT/OT systems – including OPC UA connectivity, MES integration, SCADA-level data handling and industrial communication architectures.

I have worked across sectors such as automotive, pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor/lithography systems and factory logistics, supporting both new machine development and live production environments. Typical responsibilities include machine-data acquisition, condition monitoring, event-driven messaging, shopfloor dashboards, PLC integration (Siemens S7, Beckhoff, Rockwell) and backend systems for production workflows.

My projects frequently involve WPF/MVVM-based HMI/SCADA front-ends, RabbitMQ-based data pipelines, PostgreSQL / SQL Server database design, industrial API integration and OPC UA-driven connectivity. Reliability, maintainability and clean system architecture are always key objectives – especially in regulated or safety-relevant environments.

I enjoy working closely with automation, controls and production teams to create robust, traceable and production-ready industrial software solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing plant environments.

If you are looking for senior-level automation expertise at the intersection of PLC control, SCADA systems and industrial IT, I would be happy to support your project.

Experience

  • Hirschmann/Belden
Senior Industrial Automation & SCADA Engineer
    February 2024 - October 2025 (1 year and 8 months)
    Neckartenzlingen, Germany
    • Development and enhancement of an industrial test and validation platform for I/O modules used in high-volume series production.

    • Integration of PLC systems and industrial communication protocols, including Siemens S7 via OPC UA and Allen-Bradley / Rockwell controllers using the Codebix OPC UA client.
    • Verification of fieldbus communication, signal paths and safety-relevant functions (Safety) in a production environment.

    • Implementation of the application based on WPF, MVVM and Dependency Injection.
    • Customisation and extension of a Nevron-based UI framework for production-critical use.

    • Integration of multiple backend systems using REST APIs and JSON data flows.
    • Use of PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server, including stored procedures, views, triggers and schema extensions.

    • Strong focus on Industrial Automation, SCADA architectures, automated test processes and production system integration.
  • IPTI Solution
Senior Industrial Automation & MES Integration Specialist
    April 2019 - December 2023 (4 years and 8 months)
    Altdorf bei Nürnberg, Germany
    • Multiple projects in the field of industrial automation and machine engineering. Development of an Industry 4.0 condition-monitoring application for trade-fair demonstration. Machine sensor data and production events were acquired in real-time and queued via RabbitMQ message broker, with live data also persisted in PostgreSQL and visualised through a WPF-based SCADA-style UI.
    • Support during commissioning and production startup of routing machines (Flex- and Speed-Router) used to separate assembled PCB-modules. Responsibilities included PLC step-sequence logic, troubleshooting, bug-fixing and customer-specific feature extensions.

    • Development of machine-side automation tasks in C# interfacing with an internal PLC abstraction layer (TS1) to simplify access to Siemens-based control systems.
    • Design and implementation of a production monitoring and MES-integration solution. Machine events were published into a dedicated CamX message broker, transformed and mapped to a customer-specific MES systems. Return messages were processed and executed at machine-control level.
    • MES-related data interfaces included OPC UA, REST APIs and socket-based protocols. For Siemens TIA-Portal communication an OPC UA Client from Träger was used, and REST communication was implemented using RestSharp.
    • Technologies included Visual Studio 2017/2019, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MS-SQL-Server, message-driven architectures and XML-based payload formats and byte-streams.

  • SEW Eurodrive
Senior Industrial Automation Engineer – Condition Monitoring & Shopfloor Data Acquisition
    February 2018 - March 2019 (1 year and 1 month)
    Heidenheim, Germany
Development of a backend platform for industrial condition monitoring in an automotive production environment. Monitoring data from EHB conveyor vehicles (electric monorail system) was acquired, processed and stored, and made available to both a WPF client and an HTML front-end for analysis and visualisation. The EHB system is used for automated material supply within assembly lines.

The solution aggregated live machine and sensor data such as current consumption, Wi-Fi signal quality and RPM. Data was transferred from intermediate servers via TCP messaging, while additional diagnostic data from a dedicated service vehicle was supplied via SMTP using XML payloads. The data was normalised, optimised and prepared using SQL Server Query Optimizer and SQL Server Management Studio, including the creation of SSRS reporting dashboards and index optimisation for high-performance data access.

Further work included the implementation of statistical analysis, trend monitoring and KPI calculations, with results persisted in database structures purpose-built for long-term evaluation. Database-side logic such as stored procedures, triggers, views and functions was developed across both Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments.

Application-level data access was implemented using Entity Framework 6 for configuration and management data, and classic ADO.NET for high-performance bulk-insert operations. Data provisioning to the UI layer was implemented using WCF-based service interfaces, including interface definition, architecture design and implementation.

Technologies included C#, Visual Studio 2017, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SSRS, TCP messaging, XML payload processing and message-driven communication — strongly focused on industrial automation, shop-floor data acquisition and condition-monitoring architectures.
