Title of the thesis: « The forms of engagement within participatory third-places of the Metropolis of Greater Paris »

- This thesis aims to examine the conditions of involvement of residents and the territorialities associated within third-party participatory places conventionalized with local authorities. After the construction of a database of actors of temporary participatory urban planning of the Metropolis of Greater Paris, three third-places were chosen in a comparative study perspective. Between 2017 and 2022, the survey methodology was based on participant observation, conducting semi-structured interviews and an involved research approach. The study of resident participation reveals different ways of opening governance dependent on the strategy of the intermediate actor managing the third-place. However, participation within third-places mainly takes shape in action and through « practice ». The analysis of the forms of engagement and associated territorialities reveals a weak appropriation of the third-place among local populations. The relationship to the territory of some participants, called « disaffiliated », is explained by their ephemeral mode of involvement on the place as well as the strong mobility of these actors. Thus, the results of the survey suggest that the forms of engagement aroused within them do not imply a strong territorial anchoring to the district of the third-places studied.
