About Anja

I have been working as a freelance journalist and author in Munich for 15 years. My first book was published in 2012 bySchwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf Verlag**, followed by my interview volume "Auf der Suche nach dem Sinn" (In Search of Meaning) in 2022 by **Knesebeck**. For this, I interviewed 40 very different people from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland about the meaning of life – and realized again what I love about my job as a journalist: I want to meet people I might otherwise never get to know. I am curious and enjoy diving into other lives. For this, I am always on the go, including for the travel magazines **MERIANandThe Weekender**, but it works just as well from home. Although I have always written about Munich, the city has not yet exhausted itself for me. Currently, I am supporting the editorial team of **München Tourismuswith my texts and ideas; before that, I spent three years building up the online magazineMit Vergnügen Münchenas editorial director. My focus is on regional topics, sustainability, gastronomy, travel, and society. I most enjoy conducting interviews, writing features, or columns – like for the "Hotel Europa" in **SZ Magazin**. My new non-fiction book "Besser zuhören" (Listen Better) will be published in June 2026 by **Rowohlt**.

In June 2026, my new non-fiction book "Besser zuhören" (Listen Better) will be published by Rowohlt:

"As a journalist, I was convinced for a long time that I could listen well. Until my partner suddenly accused me of never listening to him."
There are rhetoric seminars everywhere that teach you how to speak, but nowhere do we learn to listen well. If you look closely, listening seems to be a present topic of our time. In recent years, there has been a boom in listening services. Anyone who wants to tell a story can use them. And listening is also omnipresent in the media, as supporters of right-wing parties complain: "Nobody listens to me anymore these days." The ability to listen actively has suffered. This is due to the isolation of society, our ever-shortening attention spans, and the fast pace of our daily lives. Anja Schauberger meets people who explain different aspects of listening to her, including a couples therapist, a pastor, a listening coach, and a bartender. She takes us along on her journey to become a better listener – and in doing so, finds answers to the question of what we can all gain when we learn to listen to each other better again.
