    February 2020 - March 2023 (3 years and 1 month)
    Paris, France
PhD on aging and healing of naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) skin
    • Objective: to validate the relevance of studying naked mole-rat skin to identify mechanisms of resistance to skin aging
    • Method: immunohistological and transcriptomic characterization of skin and epidermis (scRNA-seq) + functional healing study in naked mole-rats at 10-year intervals
    • Results: immunohistological parameters are not modified over 10 years, and conversely, epidermal thickness increases with age. Epidermal stem cells are maintained, and the overexpression of a gene could be involved. Furthermore, the healing function is not altered with age: no slowing down of wound closure and maintenance of the speed and quality of the newly formed epidermis
    • Conclusion: the study demonstrates that naked mole-rat skin does not exhibit the classic signs of skin aging, at least up to 12 years, compared to similar ages in mice and humans, suggesting probable skin resistance to aging. In-depth study of these mechanisms could identify transferable molecules/pathways for human health.
    • Publication: Savina A, et al. 2022. Single-cell transcriptomics reveals age-resistant maintenance of cell identities, stem cell compartments and differentiation trajectories in long-lived naked mole-rats skin. Aging (Albany NY) - see link below
