One day I was descending the Yangtze River. I had borrowed one of those boats that Chinese peasants use for transporting rice, woven from bamboo and unsinkable. I hadn't chosen the right season. The waters surrounded us, wild and menacing. It was the time of the river's flood, the time when it wanted to reclaim its rights over the lives of the river dwellers. My Chinese hosts knew this, and their smiles tightened. I held my camera firmly. I wasn't very sure if I had properly secured and protected the equipment. In the distance, a sacred mountain watched us, swaying, dancing on the crest of the waves...
