About Jason

Profile

Since 2008, I have been active in IT, specializing in network infrastructures since 2009. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in setting up, securing, and managing business-critical networks.

My experience lies primarily in technically complex environments such as enterprise, telecom, service provider, and data center infrastructures. For example, I worked at KPN (telecom/service provider) and Optiver (financial sector) on large-scale networks with high demands on availability, security, and performance.

I have broad experience with large-scale security and firewall management, including managing over 300 physical and virtual firewalls in service provider and multi-tenant data center environments.

Additionally, I have three years of professional experience in software development. During that period, I developed, among other things, a central administration system to support operational processes in network management. This formed the basis for my further specialization in network automation, a field in which I have been continuously deepening my expertise ever since.

In addition to my technical knowledge, I am well-versed in both ITIL and Agile work environments. I have experience with project management, am accustomed to working in multidisciplinary teams, and support others where needed.

Experience

  • KPN (extern)
Network (Security) Engineer at KPN, The Hague
    July 2012 - January 2020 (7 years and 6 months)
    Den Haag, Netherlands
Within the Infrastructure Management department, I was primarily involved in projects focused on improving the network and security infrastructure of KPN's management network (Fixed and Mobile). This infrastructure enabled secure access to production environments for internal and external users and systems.

My responsibilities included analyzing the existing and desired network situation, creating network designs (High- and Low-Level Designs), IP planning and management including DNS, and developing migration plans with connectivity and firewall matrices and associated test plans. I also resolved issues such as overlapping networks, retaining specific IP addresses, and analyzing unknown or poorly documented traffic flows.

In execution, I implemented and configured network components (including firewalls) and performed migrations, ranging from adjusting firewall policies and routing to network expansions, network re-segmentations, and software and hardware upgrades. For projects I was responsible for, I delegated subtasks and remained available as a specialist for specific network questions after handover.

Furthermore, I contributed to standardization, including developing standard templates for network diagrams, documenting management requirements, developing configuration templates, uniformly integrating network equipment into management tools, and restructuring firewall policies and standardizing firewall objects. I also supported other teams with network automation.

    Projects and programs:

Important projects and programs I contributed to include (in chronological order):

    • Firewall Cleanup Mobidata
    • Improvement of Mobidata Network Management
    • One Management DMZ (1BDMZ)
    • BDMZ Migration Factory
    • Sauron: Administration System for Network Management
  • KPN (extern)
    Network Engineer
    May 2011 - July 2012 (1 year and 2 months)
    Den Haag, Netherlands
Within the Engineering & Installation IP (E&I IP) team, I supported large corporate clients using Epacity IP-VPN (where clients were responsible for router management) and KPN-ONE (fully managed by KPN). Both solutions offered connectivity between company locations via MPLS and E-VPN technology.

    Responsibilities:

    • Implemented and modified network solutions within client environments
    • Resolved design and implementation issues

    Client examples:

Ahold (Albert Heijn, Etos, Gall & Gall):
Delivered network solutions for approximately 1,200 store locations
    • Contributed to improved network availability by implementing 3G backup as failover for critical connections, performed during business hours with minimal disruption to payment traffic

vtsPN (Provision for Cooperation Police Netherlands):
Part of the onboarding team that integrated vtsPN into the network platform
    • Contributed to the implementation of infrastructure components for network connectivity for police services
  • Optiver
    Network Engineer
    January 2010 - May 2011 (1 year and 4 months)
In this role, I contributed to the management of Optiver's network infrastructure, including the head office in Amsterdam, collocations in Europe, and connections to offices in Chicago and Sydney, as well as links to exchanges and financial parties.

    Responsibilities:

    • Independently resolved less complex network issues within agreed SLA deadlines
    • Contributed to network security through port security, access lists, firewalls, and VPN access
    • Installed equipment (servers, switches, routers, PDUs) and laid cabling in data center environments
