About Gijs

Natural Catastrophe Modelling & Geospatial Intelligence Consultant
With over 20 years of experience in Geographic Information Science (GIS), I help organisations transform complex spatial data into actionable insights, with a strong focus on natural catastrophe (NatCat) risk modelling, climate risk assessment, and environmental analytics.

From 2009 to 2019, I served as the lead GIS expert at CoreLogic's European catastrophe modelling group in Paris. There, I led and contributed to numerous international projects, including:
  • Developing a flood risk assessment tool for Italy,
  • Managing spatial data systems for EU-funded disaster resilience programs, and
  • Delivering hydrology expertise across flood and storm surge models.
I’ve also worked extensively with organisations such as the UNDP, the World Bank, and various private sector clients, delivering solutions like:
  • AI-enhanced wildfire forecasting using fuzzy logic (MSc thesis),
  • Deforestation monitoring systems with remote sensing,
  • Climate risk indicators for critical infrastructure planning, and
  • Geospatial Data Architectures for Insurance and Reinsurance Modelling.
My approach blends scientific rigour with practical design, leveraging:
  • Advanced GIS & remote sensing techniques,
  • Machine learning and AI-driven analytics,
  • Earth Observation data,
  • And clear, impactful data visualisation tools.
The industries I serve include Insurance & Reinsurance, Environmental Consulting, Development Aid, and Public Sector Resilience Planning.

Let’s Collaborate
Whether you're designing a climate adaptation strategy, building a catastrophe model, or making sense of spatial data at scale, I bring deep expertise and a collaborative mindset to help you succeed. Please feel free to reach out to discuss how we can collaborate.

For this project, I created a detailed cartographic map for Bioregional Weaving. The design highlights Ireland’s watersheds, rivers, and waterbodies on a relief base, produced both as a presentation slide and in high resolution for posters and promotional materials.

A key focus was balancing detail with readability; the map features were carefully styled to fade into the background at broader scales, ensuring the map remains clear and uncluttered without losing precision.

The result is a beautifully refined basemap that can be used across events, presentations, and communications, offering both accuracy and strong visual impact.

It was a pleasure continuing the collaboration on this exciting project, developing a geospatial multi-criteria analysis to support Urban Agriculture for a US city. The Agritecture team demonstrated excellent professionalism, offering clear direction and constructive feedback throughout. Despite the tight deadline, their organised approach allowed us to deliver a robust and scalable solution that could certainly be adapted for other urban agriculture zoning projects. Completed the Spatial Decision Support Layers for the city, and the semi-automated selection process was well-received by the city officials. Exciting developments for Urban Agriculture.
