We had the opportunity to develop a fully accessible climate calculator for Berliner Stadtreinigung. Accessibility plays a central role in public institutions, and for a company like BSR, compliance with the WCAG 2.0 AA standard is mandatory. Therefore, the entire project was geared from the outset towards ensuring unrestricted use for all individuals.

The climate calculator allows users to calculate their personal CO₂ footprint based on the type, quantity, and frequency of their waste. The goal is to create greater awareness of the impact of one's own waste behavior on the environment.

The collaboration with the Heidelberg University of Education has been ongoing for over two years. During this time, we have revised, further developed, and in some cases completely rebuilt numerous components of the project.

The central components include:

• The mobile Flutter app

• The React-based web app

• The custom-developed Strapi backend

At the beginning of the collaboration, we faced significant technical challenges, as a different agency had previously managed the project. The existing code was neither documented nor structured, external documentation was completely missing, and the infrastructure was unnecessarily complex and difficult to maintain.

We have consistently addressed these issues over the past years. We stabilized the technical foundation, introduced modern standards, and made the project maintainable in the long term. The result was a successful app launch, which today is based on a clean, scalable architecture.

The collaboration with BFN Access GmbH spanned a period of two years. During this time, we gradually developed the originally small React Native app into a market-ready solution. Today, it is one of the serious competitors in the field of ticket scanning systems and is used by clubs such as VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, among others.

The BFN Access Scanner App has processed over five million tickets to date. It is used at football matches, in zoos, and at various other events.

One of the biggest challenges lay in the existing backend, which had been built by another developer previously. The structure was very extensive, confusing, and difficult to maintain. Over the years, we have gradually modernized, cleaned up, and optimized the backend. The underlying architecture is based on PHP and Laravel.

The app offers complete offline availability. The reason for this is the often unstable network quality at large events, especially during Bundesliga matches. Tickets must be securely scanned and validated even without an internet connection to ensure a smooth entry process.
